Wynton Marsalis' "All Rise" Symphony No. 1 with Tulsa Symphony & Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra

Tulsa Symphony, Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at Lincoln Center to Perform in Remembrance of Tulsa Race Massacre 100th Anniversary

On the somber occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre, the Tulsa Symphony and Festival Chorus will join forces with world-renowned trumpeter, composer, educator and bandleader Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra to present All Rise (Symphony No. 1), Marsalis’ epic blues suite that “was written themes of unity and spiritual ascendance.”  David Robertson will conduct the performance, and the chorus will be under the leadership of Damien L. Sneed. This event will take place at the BOK Center on Sunday, June 6 at 3 pm, and is produced in alliance with the Tulsa Race Massacre Commission.

“When I was writing ‘All Rise,’ Kurt Masur, conductor of the New York Philharmonic, told me, ‘The line between civilization and barbarism is much thinner than you think.’ That’s why with everything that you do, you have to decry barbarism and the reduction of people.” said Wynton Marsalis. 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre Centennial Commission project director Phil Armstrong voiced, “We are so grateful to have Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz in Tulsa for the Centennial. Processing tragedy and trauma is complex. For me, music has always been an emotional outlet, and I hope this experience provides just that to Tulsans during this important week of remembrance, resilience and hope.”.  Keith C. Elder, Executive Director of the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra, added, “We are glad to bring this moving work and these internationally recognized artists to the Tulsa community to commemorate the tragic events of 1921. It will be an evening where the power of music will be used to unite and heal our community.

Marsalis’symphony blends various influences from classical, jazz, gospel, and Latin-based music into a particularly poignant work to memorialize the Massacre. The piece was commissioned by the New York Philharmonic and first performed at Lincoln Center in December 1999.  It features three sections of four movements each, which are swing-based and in the structure of the12 bar blues. The first segment is uplifting and energetic, the second set of movements are more dark and distressing, and the final section culminates with the elevating energy of a gospel choir that is titled “I Am (Don’t You Run From Me) – God’s love is what calls us to rise to the complete fulfillment of who we are. Our choice determines the extent to which we will rise, and the act of rising itself is thanks for His love, which is the source of our life and creativity.”

Tickets are on sale NOW at TulsaSymphony.org

Leah Paul CD release show // "We Will Do The Worrying"

Happy to announce that I am the featured vocalist on Leah Paul's soon-to-be-released album, "We Will Do The Worrying" which will be released at a show on November 20th at The Bootleg Theater. Also featured will be Nick Mancini, Chris Speed, and The Koan Quartet. More details to come soon!

We Will Do The Worrying is an extension of the rich chamber writing Leah has honed on her previous albums, this time bringing in lushly layered vocals, alluring string quartet writing and percussive elements to create vignettes of other-worldly landscapes and experiences. Leah's gift for weaving harmonically textural motifs, playful rhythmic counterpoint and sparse yet meaningful lyrics allow the ten pieces on this album to soar, sparking imaginative daydreams in the minds-eye of the listener.

We Will Do The Worrying first began as through-composed chamber works, with lyrical content evolving as each song took shape. Meditations upon dreams and childhood memories are layered and braided throughout distinctly contoured melodies, the end result is a gorgeous marriage of dreamlike lyrics, luxuriant timbres and agile orchestration elevating this music into a genre all of it's own.

Leah recorded this album using engineers and musicians from both Los Angeles where she is based and New York City, two cities that are both deeply meaningful to her. Her reputation as a sought-after flutist, improvisatory collaborator and orchestrator of film music shine inspirational light on this deeply creative and evocative work.

Formed in the spirit of "Now!"... this unique, and bass-less band reflects a spontaneity and search for adventure, freely, but within forms! Seasoned players all, playing a modern style of jazz, they come together here, experiencing the joy of comradery and trust, delving into the unknown! Especially for a vocalist to hold this position with musicians of this quality, is a statement in itself.
Gary Fukushima holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from CalArts and is now on the faculty at California State University, Northridge, and employed by the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. He currently writes for the publication of the L.A. Weekly. He is a co-founder of The L.A. Jazz Collective.  http://garyfukushima.net/
Brad Dutz...composer, author, teacher, performer, has recorded on 138 projects (and counting!) Performing credits too numerous to mention, Brad is considered one of the top percussionists in the world.

Jeff Richman is a pro with a 35 year career in performance, producing, composing, arranging and recording. In addition to his 16 solo releases, he's produced 6 tribute CD's to Carlos Santana, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Steely Dan, Miles Davis, Jeff Beck and John Coltrane. He's appeared on countless tv/film scores, and teaches at M.I. Hollywood. (Cathy thinks of him as the Westcoast Scofield of guitar!)  www.jeffrichman.net
Cathy Segal-Garcia, thought of as "a musician's singer", is a respected vocalist, teacher, and starter/connector for the community. For many years she's been active in her career, which includes aw well, composing and producing, all over the world. She's presently working on her 10th CD, which will become several volumes of duos between herself and an array of fantastic pianists!  www.cathysegalgarcia.com
"...real musical integrity. Songs that are stripped bare of the more commercialized pretentiousness of the music industry for tunes that have a unique story and artist to make sure the story is told. N.P.R jazz. The vibe of artistic integrity coupled with honest emotion for a captivating experience." - Critical Jazz

In 2006, Afton Hefley moved from Tulsa, OK to begin a winding journey through nearly every facet of the music world in Los Angeles. One of the most notable of those jobs was touring the world with Tears For Fears, off and on from 2007 - 2011 as more and less, a production manager. The "more" part of that job title was when she was asked by the band to join them on stage to sing backing vocals on a couple of songs. Afton recalls that it was that experience in which she discovered where her heart truly was.
After nearly 10 years in LA, Afton now appears primarily as a vocalist. Deeply engaged in original creative music as well as jazz, pop, folk, and classical, her characteristic touch and unique approach is in demand throughout LA. She can be heard in the most notable venues, and always with the most dynamic musicians the city has to offer.
In 2013, under the pen-name, Sangster, Afton released a 5 song EP of original music titled "Human Becoming", featuring a host of LA's top tier musicians from the creative music scene. We now find her putting down the guitar and pen and turning her attention to The Great American Songbook and classic pop tunes, familiar to her past.  http://www.thesangster.com/
LA jazz guitar guru, Larry Koonse, sums it up perfectly: "I finally got a chance to listen to Afton's EP. I was totally floored. Her music (and vocal quality) gets me right in the gut and heart. What a gorgeous sound she has along with an beautiful way of shaping the experience (phrasing). Her songs which have a recurring theme of looking at people with great intentions and potential who are left behind by the forward motion of life is so powerful to me. I think about this all the time. In my estimation she would be the "it person" in the singer/songwriter world if the powers that be knew about her. My god .... what a gift!"

Afton Hefley & Scott McQuade at Main St. Tavern in Broken Arrow, OK

My TULSA friends and family!! I will be performing at Main Street Tavern in Broken Arrow on Wednesday, June 17th as part of their "Jazz Wednesdays" series, from 6-9PM!!
Accompanying me will be the fantastic Scott McQuad on keys. We'll be doing jazz tunes (obviously!), some classic pop tunes, and even some Okie favorites.
Apparently the place packs up on these nights so, maybe consider making a reservation.
It's a restaurant and bar (as opposed to a concert venue/listening room) so, people will be coming and going, AND you can get dinner there, too. I hear the menu is great.
I'm only in town for a few days so, this would be a great night to come out so I can see your familiar faces!
See y'all there!!
